Whenever we perform Kata like these, some people say “Samurai would NOT sit Seiza on the floor with their katana on their waist!” That is both right and wrong. Whenever samurai sat Seiza on the floor in the past, they would take their katana out of their belt and place it on the floor next to them. However, to make the technique more difficult to perform in Iai training, they would purposely train Kata where they keep their katana on their waist. This was a training method that existed from the samurai time. So it was something they would never do in their daily lives, but would often do in their katana training.

So intruiging the way that people conflict general knowledge with the nuances of details. I like to assume a professional understands the purpose for why theyre doing what they do more than I.

It's basically like steph curry dribbling 2 basketballs in training

There was something similar when I trained Tae Kwon Do many years ago. We would do punching exercises while in Horseriding Stance... facing forward, legs spread, knees bent. Obviously not a stance you would ever use in actual combat, even sparring, but was done to focus on our form for punching and strengthen our legs because standing like that even for a few minutes was quite a strain on the muscles.

IIRC Seiza was also specifically made by daimyo and other big government figures specifically to make people's legs fall asleep so it was harder to get ambushed and assassinated during an audience or some other meeting event lel

so Seiza is literally a handicap to make attacking someone harder

I heard the techniques in a sitting version were done as a homework because in the dojo the ceilings obviously were high enough to practice while standing up but in the normal houses the ceilings would be lower and therefore the techniques were practiced by sitting down at home so to not cut into the ceiling which would damage both the ceilings and likely the tamahagane blades which they would’ve been using during the Edo period.

I imagine another factor being if you’re kneeling on the battlefield you would have your sword on your side.

Can we get some naginata videos?

My understanding for this was so to practice inside because of hitting the uchi on the ceiling. Outside you practice standing up.

Is it more difficult to train with the katana in your belt compared to it being on the floor though?

I dunno. White and Wong sounds like a San Francisco buddy cop series from the 70s.

It would be cool to seem more videos that dispel myths and misunderstandings because alot of people typically in the west get confused by alot of things that the east tend to understand

I understand making your training more difficult than what you expect to encounter, so you're at an advantage. What I don't understand is intentionally training in muscle memory you would never use in the real world. I've always been told, "Train how you fight."
