The Hobbing process is most frequently used to manufacture spur and helical gears. A cutting tool called a Hob is used to cut the gear blank and remove the spaces between the teeth. ..bit.ly/3onfQon


The simultaneous rotation of the hob and the gear blank create a generating cutting envelope. The relative speed difference between the hob and the blank are controlled by a universal transmission and change gears in the hobbing machine. It takes gears to make gears.

Pfauter is the manufacturer of the machine shown in this short video. The machine is German made and the process was patented by Pfauter in 1900.

The gear being cut is aluminum and will receive further chamfering, deburring and a hardening surface treatment. Gears made from this material and process are commonly found in instrumentation, actuation, and other lower torque applications.
