I lost 2 divisions this weekend, here’s what I learned!

(This was at the IBJJF San Jose Open in the adult / light / blue division, gi and no-gi. I also did no-gi adult open class and got silver there… felt strong af thanks to @victorysubmissionstrength.)

You have it, and then you don’t… I started off with some huge takedowns, only to lose 10-2 in my first match of my gi division, and lose by an RNC in my first match of my no-gi division 😂

Just because you started ahead, doesn’t mean it will stay that way! You must continue to stay ahead.

It was a perfect reminder that crazy sh** happens during matches, and that as always, I need to extract the technical and mindset lessons, and improve my Jiu Jitsu and competitions tactics.

This is officially my first comp of 2024, and now my goal is to not pull guard… so at least that mission was accomplished. But, that’s nerve wracking since my name is Josh, and I am a guard puller…

I did do better in the open class, winning my first match by ankle lock (I still didn’t pull guard!)

But I did lose 2-0 in the final to this 17-year-old who looks like the Brazilian Terminator 😂

Anyway, it’s good to remember that these things can happen, because it helps me to refocus on the mission.
