In Japan visual novels or Eroge R18 still have physical disks and physical boxes with the cd case inside and and the companies are still releasing new visual novels every month or so physically.

Me who bought a disk drive for my new pc:

-Production cost
-Games become very storage heavy (I think GTA 5 needed like 3-4 DVD's)
-You'd have to receive patches and updates via internet anyway
-Shipping
-Distribution
Basically, I don't think it's because of sharing and stuff, but because selling games online is much much quicker and simpler.

That's okay. There are dedicated people out there preserving these games for all eternity, in digital form. The only thing stopping digital games from being "owned" is DRM.
