As a bricklayer with 46+years experience and countless chimneys built and repaired I can personally guarantee you that flashing is essential. Water infiltration plus the freezing in the winter will definitely cause a lot of damage. Between the flashing and the "cap" or "wash" on top of the chimney is where you'll find most all the damage. Trust Me.

Does anyone else notice the shingles of the cricket are placed under the the existing roof shingles with no ridge cap shingle.
There will a multi trade follow up call on this one.
