In GraphQL, you fetch data with the help of queries. A query is a GraphQL Operation that allows you to retrieve data from the server.

GraphQL operation can either be a read or a write operation. A GraphQL query is used to fetch data from the backend system while a mutation is used to post data to the backend system. In either case, the operation is a simple string that a GraphQL server can parse and respond with the data in a specific format. The popular response format that is used for mobile and web applications is JSON.

GraphQL queries help to reduce over fetching of data. Unlike Restful API, GraphQL allows a user to restrict fields that should be fetched from the server. This means smaller queries and lesser traffic over the network which helps reducing the response time.

Let’s understand query variables - If a query has dynamic values to be passed, then query variables are used to represent the dynamic values. Hence, the query can be reused by the client applications.

Let’s understand type in graphql query - GraphQL responses can be represented as a tree, and the scalar types are the leaves at the ends of the tree. There can be many levels in a nested response, but the last level will always resolve to a scalar or Enum type. GraphQL comes with five built-in scalar types i.e., Int, Float, String, Boolean, and ID.
