This is a horribly dangerous precedent. Specific video game mechanics being patentable is a horrible precedent to set because even something as simple as platforming could be permanently disbarred from other games. Even control schemes in a controller.

They have a patent on the ball catching mechanic. All they have to do is make them launch the balls with something and they are good to go since the patent is for specifically throwing the ball

The original idea was pokeballs were based on children's bug catchers and pokemon battles were like kids fighting their bugs. Thats what the creator based it off of. So you cant copywrite your basic inspiration. Anyone can take the same basic idea and asthetic but with their own creations.
