I like slayer and I dislike traditional mmo kill 25 boar quests
It’s because when I play RuneScape I’m playing it with the mindset of spending like 8+ hours doing the same activity. Throw on some Netflix or something in the background and time flies past.
Slayer helps break up that gameplay and makes it more diverse because you’re doing something different every hour but still leveling the same skill over that 8+ hour window. Slayer honestly feels like it levels pretty fast to me because it’s varied, it generates gold and farming supplies. It levels up like 6 skills at the same time. Compared to woodcutting which is cut the same tree for the same xp in 1 single skill, forestry helped a lot to make WC better and slayer is just forestry but for combat.
Compared to other MMOs, you can’t afk. Those 25 boars you are clicking on all of them and using multiple button presses per kill, also running around to find them. So those quests are terribly boring.

Slayer creates a balanced progression for gearing and skilling.
It takes, I need to kill 100,000 boars to lvl my combat stats and I need to pick up 1,000,000 item spawns... and turns it into bite sized tasks that provide money, items and gear.
Kill X of this quests were never bad. The reason they become stale and boring after time is because they lack variety. Slayer becomes a core branch in the tree of progression. You can progress in many other ways by simply interacting with Slayer.
Osrs is literally built off of the concept of kill x... every item drop from monsters is kill 28, 128, 512, 1000, 5000, 10000... its the core concept in the entire game. Slayer just connects this to all of the other skills and such.
You can play and enjoy the game without Slayer... but when you embrace the progression of Slayer it provides a much more long term path and enjoyment over time.
Comparing OSRS skilling and progression to WOW for example... OSRS comes out way ahead in my opinion... because they embraced "kill x" and made it enjoyable in multiple different ways. They built the game around it from the ground up, they didn't add it in after the fact.

As someone who has played runescape since 2003 and Wow since January of 2005, I can say slayer is way better. Why is slayer better than other MMO questing? Simple. The other MMOs bind the tedious tasks to XP for the entire development of the character and give superficial rewards. Slayer takes the tedious tasks and binds it to individual skills and grants long-term benefits for completion of the tasks. In Wow, for examples the most reliable way of gaining xp fast is the completion of quests. This is the only activity the game gives you reliable XP until you reach the max level. There aren't a ton of things you can really do. So, you're kind of forced into leveling through quests for weeks or even months. The worst part is they lock quests behind chains. So if there is a particular quest you dont want to do, you end up having to do it in order to continue the chain.Slayer, you can stop whenever you want and level another skill. If you want to skip a task, the only penalty is 30 slayer points. If you want to block an entire task, you can save up and spend 100 points to do so. Slayer is how MMOs should be handling questing. Also, slayer doesn't involve gathering quests or introduction quests. One of the bad designs of MMO questing is in order to have the player find the next sequence of quests they have to give out introduction quests that send the player to the next quest chain. There are times in WoW where you have like 20 of these fucking quests and they want you to travel the opposite end of the zone or to entirely different zone across the map and then head back. It's just bad game design. Slayer and questing in Runescape are the best features jagex did right compared to other MMOS.

One thing all RuneScape players agree on is that everything in RuneScape sucks lol
