More Context & Credits:

During the Industrial Revolution in Victorian England (1800s), child labor was very common, especially among poor families and orphans.

Factory owners liked hiring children because their small size let them crawl into tight, dangerous spaces like chimneys, machines, or mine shafts. They were cheaper to hire than adults, and girls were often paid even less than boys.

Many children worked 12 to 16 hours a day, from early morning until night with very little rest. If they were late, made mistakes, or fell asleep, they could be punished or even beaten. There was no safety equipment, so injuries, illness, and even death were common.

Later, the government made laws to protect children. The Factory Act of 1833 banned factory work for kids under nine and limited working hours for older children. The Mines Act and Chimney Sweepers Act also raised the working age and pushed for safer conditions.

But change was slow, and many children continued to suffer for years.

14 hour days? poor kids never even got a full night's rest, much less an actual chance at life. children that age need more than 8hrs of sleep and they couldn't even get that once you factor in the time it took to get home and do whatever else they had to once there.😭
