I was born in the fifties and fell in love with electric Bass but never really progressed due to a lack of music education. Today I am in constant awe with how much knowledge is available on YouTube and other sources. So many things that I didn't know that I didn't know.
Oh brave new world that has such people in it

In bluegrass and old time music, it’s the same expectation for bass as in other genres, hold down the rhythm. Connect the melody and rhythm. Just do that and you’re a hero. Play a solo and great, but that’s not what anyone really wants you there for. They want you to keep the rhythm happening right.
