The Tenerife Accident happened on March 27, 1977. When two Boeing 747 planes collided on the runway of Los Rodeos Airport (now North Tenerife Airport.) The collision occurred when KLM Flight 4805 initiated its take off when if was not supposed to. to. PanAm also moved up to runway four instead runway three, not getting ATC clearance, because it was to sharp of a turn for a 747. It crashed into Pan Am Flight 1736 the plane supposed to take off. Killing 248 total occupants, 234 passengers, and 14 crew members on KLM 4805. On Pan Am flight 1736 there was 396 occupants, 380 passengers, 16 crew, and 61 survivors.

An investigation by Spanish authorities concluded that KLM thought they were able to take off my Air Traffic Control (ATC) but were not, instead Pan Am was issued to fly. Unfortunately, Dutch investigators realized that it was miscommunications through the radio between ATC and KLM. KLM admitted that their crew that day was responsible and the airline agreed to financially compensate the relatives of all of the victims.

Due to a bomb threat at Gran Canaria Airport, both planes were diverted to Tenerife. However, the airport was not adequately prepared for the sudden influx of planes and passengers, leading to congestion on the taxiways. Dense fog further reduced visibility, creating a challenging environment for air traffic control.

The disaster had a lasting impact on the industry, illustrating in particular the vital importance of using standardized phraseology in radio communications. Additionally, cockpit procedures were examined, which contributed to establishing crew resource management as an essential component of airline pilot training. The joint crew involvement is welcomed throughout airplane operations, and the captain is no longer seen as infallible.

Thank you for reading hope you have a good day/night.
