My 3 brothers and I shared a 61 bug. Had this same 1 gallon reserve. Had to use it for midnight shift in the winter. Was thinking of stopping for gas, and when I came around the corner there was only 1 car at the pumps. So I stopped, while waiting for the car to move, my car quit. No problem! Just kick the reserve valve. IT WAS ON RESERVE! So I had to push it to the pump. Anyone who went on reserve was supposed to refuel it!

When I learned to SCUBA dive many years ago, the tanks had “J” valves, when the lever was up, it meant you had a built in reserve of about 500psi. You’d reach back and pull the lever and it would give you access to that reserve and you knew it was time to head to the surface, except most of the time that lever, which moved very easily, would have already been accidentally triggered and you actually were out of air. Got really good at doing free ascents. Those valves are now banned.

While in the Army stationed in Germany i had a 1956 beetle from 1967 to 1970.
That car was so much fun to drive. I swapped the engine to an engine out of a 1963. Lots more power. As far as a gas guage my VW had a dip stick to measure the amount of fas in the tank.
This car took me all over Germany. Loved it.
