When people say that the live-action How to Train Your Dragon is pretty much exactly like the original, they are not exaggerating, and it is very impressive. I don’t think people understand how hard it is to adapt an animation to live-action while keeping it exactly the same, that is a rare achievement in itself.

I actually think I liked this one quite a bit more than the original, but that’s also coming from someone who isn’t a big fan of that franchise.

They added a couple lines here and there to fill in the gaps, but was so subtle and fit perfectly with the rest of the story. This might just be the best live-action adaptation of an animated film that I’ve ever seen. The bar is usually set pretty low for these types of films, but this is what fans want from live-action adaptations.

I also have to mention Gerard Butler since he is Stoick both in this and the animation, and it is quite amazing to see, easily my favourite character.

The made the world feel so stylized and cartoonish in a live-action world which gives the world the same dream-like vibe of the original. These aren’t the type of Vikings you’d see in the real world, they real preserved the original style which is also very impressive, especially considering they were working with a slightly smaller budget.
