Do humidifiers help with allergies? Well, allergies happen when your nose or your mouth or your eyes is exposed to something that you're allergic to, like pollen, dust or mold, or cat dander or dog dander. What happens then, is you get inflammation and it leads to nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, and allergy symptoms.

A humidifier can keep your nose from being dry and that dryness is what allows the pollen to get stuck in there. And so if you can have mucus created, it'll catch the pollen and the mold or the dust, and then you'll be able to blow it out and you'll have less allergy symptoms. So that's why we will often tell patients to use a salt water rinse, which is essentially humidifying the nose. And a humidifier in your room will also help decrease the dryness.

So I think it's worth considering a humidifier if you feel like you have a very dry air environment and you're having allergies. The one caveat though, is you have to be careful with a humidifier that it's clean because humidifiers can also grow mold, and that is also an allergy trigger. So you just have to balance those two things out. If you'd like to learn more, please subscribe.
