August 24, 1921

Led by Keeney and Mooney, on August 24, 1921, the angry miners marched upon Mingo County. They had several things that they wanted to accomplish. The first was to confront the coal companies over their labor practices. Then they wanted to organize the county into a union. Thirdly they wanted to free the imprisoned Union men in the Mingo County jail. And finally to end martial law in the area. Many of the marchers were World War I veterans and they were bringing those skills with them for the fight.
