Grades should be based on merit only. Teachers and professors are sometimes way more biased to certain individuals than they think (in my experience).

In law school, we had exam numbers for all exams and most papers. Definitely takes care of the bias to some degree.

Thatās standard procedure at the university I went to. Student number only. That was 32 yrs ago. In fact, my business prof said interviews for jobs almost do zero to improve fit for companies and bring in all sorts of bias. When musicians audition for symphonies they are behind a blind. But, people want their narrative to win. And that includes institutionalizing racial quotas.
The problem starts in grade 1. If the parents donāt care about schooling, and the school doesnāt make sure every student gets the proper attention, waiting to address issues by college is useless.

Every course I've TA'd for does not blind the grading. I'll admit I have definitely caught myself being biased in the grading, particularly for the students that I had gotten to know and wanted to succeed.

Something like that maybe, BUT you can learn a lot about someone through how they write, print or cursive, dot iās and cross tās, big lettering or small, neat or messyā¦. It can be informative i formationā¦. Else we are left with scantronsā¦.

The problem is that in undergrad sometimes you can tell who the person is by thier writing.

Simple solution- use Roll call Numbers (5-6 digit) for Students.

All the papers I grade in my career are blended... Only on oral exams I get to sit face to face with the students.

While society (of course not everyone) has been so obsessed with racism and I do hope we can get over it, this is such a simple notion that makes sense and could actually be very effective in addressing real bias,in reality.

I had a professor who refused to know our names, or to have us write our names on our assignments. Instead he provided us with a number that they themselves did not know. So when he was distributed our graded papers and exams, we'd find them with our number. They claimed it was necessary to prevent human bias.
