"Cleopatra" begins with the young Princess Cleopatra ascending to the throne of Egypt after her father's death. In order to secure her position, she seeks the support of Julius Caesar, the Roman ruler. During his visit, Cleopatra falls in love with Caesar, and their romance blooms. The climax unfolds as Cleopatra accompanies Caesar to Rome, facing challenges and political intrigues. However, Caesar's assassination leaves her in a vulnerable position. Later, she meets Mark Antony, a powerful Roman general, and they become allies and lovers. In the end, a civil war erupts, and Cleopatra and Antony find themselves on the losing side against Octavian's forces. Trapped and believing Antony is dead, Cleopatra takes her own life using a snake bite. Antony, upon hearing the news, chooses to die by falling on his own sword. The film concludes with their tragic deaths and Egypt coming under Roman rule.

1934 was a big year for colbert, won the best actress oscar for it happened one night also won best picture and started in 2 best picture nominees cleopatra and imitation of life and still to this day the only actress to star in 3 best picture nominees in the same year
