His argument would apply to most things that we see on this earth. But God is not from this earth; He is different. God is good. He does not have the capacity to be evil, and therefore cannot inflict evil upon others. Evil comes from the absence of God. It appeared on this Earth when God took a step back and gave us the choice to disobey him. Therefore, God cannot be evil and all the evil that we experience comes from our own broken world.

What he doesn't understand is all "good" things happen from God. So without God, all you have is "bad" things. Thus -- hell. So funny enough, complaining about the bad things SHOULD technically lead you closer to God since you wouldn't want Him to leave your life and leave you only with bad things.
