I was born in the late 70s & it's interesting to think about landmarks that existed PRE internet. Stuff like Challenger or Chernobyl, truly existential events are really the only collective memories. Otherwise it's just the mundane that individuals my age remember

The internet, which promised an inextinguishable archive of all human knowledge, has instead made archive hobbyism necessary.
It turns out that, actually, the internet couldn't support the terminal mass of information and has instead suffocated vast quantities of knowledge under SEO, AI-generated nothingness.
It's a digitized version of archeologist David Macaulay's satire of his profession, "Motel of the Mysteries," where he posits that the "lost civilization of Usa" finally collapsed because the entire society was "covered in layers of junk mail."
