Oftentimes, we in the west can get confused about what makes western liberal democracy a generally better way to run the government. Sometimes people focus on the democracy part and assume that democracy as a concept is what makes western government styles superior to totalitarian regimes. But if you were to ask Aristotle or Polybius, they would say that it's not the democratic features per se, but the fact that our constitutions contain a special mix of features in equal proportions. They viewed the ideal constitution as a mix between the three "pure" constitutions described by Herodotus in the 5th century BCE: monarchy, oligarchy, and democracy. Enlightenment thinkers like Montesquieu believed that the most effective way to govern was by separating the various governing bodies and maintaining each one as a check on the other. The framers of the US constitution combined the ancient ideas of Aristotle with those philosophers of the 17th and 18th centuries to create the western world we live in today.
