Every so often the sky in my home town had a sky written message. Sometimes itâs random, other times itâs a big smily face, or a âBe Happyâ. Itâs a fun strange little surprise. I have no clue who is responsible for it or if there is any significance to it. But it makes life a little more fun. I always just assumed it was jet fuel, thanks for explaining it to me Hank!

If you're like me wondering why skywriting is less common than 20-30 years ago, I looked up the answer.
Turns out most skywriting pilots were veteran air force pilots from WW2, Vietnam, etc. So as those pilots aged outz there was no new workforce to replace them. There just aren't as many pilots in the population compared to all the trained people following the wars of the 20th century.

The other benefit is canola oil can be selectively injected, so a pilot can interrupt the smoke production - say, to allow them to fly around to draw the top of a capital J.

Not all smoke made this way is used for skywriting. Its often used for airshows, like the Blue Angels.

I imagine vegetable glycerin, like what's used in fog machines, would make for a good relatively environmentally-friendly skywriting solution.

Unless you are looking at the skywriting from just the right angle, it's going to appear as if the pilot is drunk and his plane is on fire.
