People should experiment with washes more. Avoid specialty products. The only thing you need as a beginner is a bottle of Tamiya panel line black, and a couple tubes of oil paints (black, dark brown & white) and a jar of white spirits. Get good quality paint. Use the Tamiya stuff on small jobs. Anything large, use the oil. Both products are very forgiving. Avoid specialty washes. They work fine, but they cost a lot and you learn little. Mastering oils should be a person's goal once they get through the initial learning curve of model building. They are cheap, easy, and provide amazing results. Practice on small kits you don't care about, so the stress is low.

When I started making model kits I use black paint mixed with water as wash.
