Coward is a really bad take though.
Some people were forbidden to be the theatre kid in school and venturing back to that level of self independence without that feeling isn’t easy.
If you want more engagement in DnD, structure your game for it. Give engagement examples, talk about under engagement at your table, give a table by table engagement guide.
If you don’t want to do any of that, then don’t complain about people not jumping into DND or people not getting into character.

Wonderful point. You're already doing the nerdy thing; just commit. I had a theater kid player at my table way back in the day who used to laugh when I put on a different voice as the town constabulary. Everyone else hated playing with him.
