I have always found this group very interesting, bring so similar yet in many ways weirdly different.

It is not only phytosaurs that have throat armor. Even some actual crocs (as in Neosuchia closer to Crocodylia than to Thalattosuchia) have such a feature. Goniopholids had big osteoderms and armor on throat and belly.

One other important difference between phytosaurs and crocodilians is with respect to dental morphology
