Your new "word of the day" YT format is fantastic, Richard. It's ideal for getting across key points for those of us who can feel overwhelmed by all the details of ham radio that get lost in the trees of longer videos. Please keep them coming!

Given that this video will be watched worldwide, we should point out that phone modes ARE allowed on this band in Australia and some other IARU Region 3 countries. It's a fantastic band for cross-continent HF contacts in Australia and often works when 40 or 20m do not. The reasoning that with 50 kHz wide bandwidth, phone modes cannot be accommodated seems unfounded as we have phone modes on 60m which (under ITU WRC15 definition), is only 15 kHz wide - less than a third of the space available on 30m.
By the way, contests are not allowed on several WRC defined bands (30, 17 & 12m) and in some countries also not on Top Band and below.
Is FreeDV (the narrowband digital phone mode) allowed on 30m in IARU R1?
Ed.
