#Shorts video showing how I'm starting to prefer mounting my 4-1/2" grinder cutoff wheels....now, this is for FLAT cutoff wheels, and cutoff wheels similar to the Flap Disc and Grinding Wheel I showed should be mounted raised area DOWN (with the grinder laying these are in the video).

I like label up, if there’s a crack or something wrong with the disk, it will be easier to spot before turning it into a projectile.

I don’t pay attention. It goes on how it goes on. Sometimes up and sometimes down.

I think aluminum wheels are directional. I know the ones we get at work are. They usually have to be label up.

Label up or down don't make any diference. What does is that metalic part in middle it should be facing grinder and side without metal facing nut. If you do so you don't need tool to change wheels

I cut aluminium with steel discs

They have spinning direction labelled on them, you don't want to install it the wrong way, cos it may explode.

Older cut off wheels used to have a backing plate built into one side of them, the other side took the nut with the washer and would say which side out. Nowadays that doesn’t seem to be an issue

If all the rest of the grinder attachments are labeled down... What makes you think that a zip disk should be label up

i think label up makes sense if you are using multiple kinds. if a manufacturer has a reason for it being up or down it will say on the disk.

I have a Makita grinder with X-lock so there’s only one way. They clip in, no tools or tightening. Bosch also has X-lock, Makita just licensed it from them as well as a similar clip on system for the oscillating multitool. It’s great!

This was VERY helpful to me. I just got my first grinder and am fearfully* unsure of which way the wheels go. Watching this video, now I know for sure.
Good point about placing wheels face-up when they'll work either way. I had wondered about that too.
*Semi-related: I have 2 photos of an acquaintance who substituted the arbor nut with some other nut. One is of his Levi's pants cut straight down the the zipper flap. The other is of him in a hospital bed with his penis fileted, a whole bunch of stitches, and a drainage tube.
I'd never owned or operated a grinder. After seeing those pics, I didn't think I'd ever want to, until I needed one.

I put the label next to the tool handle. Because I can tell when the blade comes to a complete stop.

I used to use slitting thin discs or flap discs for sharpening drill bit tips because they deflect under slight pressure so label down to keep the blerb 📜 intact, what is the detail of a cut off wheel metal ring 🕳️ centre it may actually have a mechanical rotation grip advantage for metal side first like grinder wheels 🛞 🤷🏼‍♂️.

How much does it matter 🫠🤤.

The nuts however are reversible for thick or thin disc centerin

All discs are designed label down, that’s why the pressure ring is shaped like it is

in your description . label down. there is a bezel on that side that needs to be reinforced with the nut not pried off

Label down always, can use the abrasive side for quick deburrs or closing in on a cut line.

Apparently doing this will cause the disc to immediately detonate and take out your neighbors dog though, so be careful. Somehow i've had luck of the draw on discs and have never had it happen.

It's not gonna be readable either way for long. You should know what type of disc you have and which one you need. Unless you want to run the risk of jacking up material, or blowing up a disc. Either way after 30 years, I can hear them by now.
