Marking the start of rice plantings season was an interesting purpose from the community or society building perspective.
"During this time, men and women from different social backgrounds come together in a spirit of unity, working diligently to plant rice saplings in the fertile fields. "
Something like this has existed also in the agricultural communities in Finland in times before agricultural machines required a lot of workforce for planting and harvesting. Though it has never been rice in the Nordic climate.
There has also been religion like believes of supernatural beings somehow controlling seasons and nature in general.
Not so totally different after all, though the culture in Nepal is older and more complex. It also seems to have been less effected by Christianity. though at least for me it seems to have been effected by many other invading believes and cultural influences.
