I'm from a Caribbean island with tons of caves around the shoreline that is rumored to hold pirate treasure. I have had friends here in Canada asked me why didn't I go exploring any of these caves, "you could have found treasure! You could have been rich." This, this is why Caribbean people don't go poking around in holes in the ground that could be flooded by the ocean at any time regardless of how many rumors of gold there is at the bottom of that hole.

I knew John and his wife, who was expecting at the time of the tragedy. I also knew the first responders who tried to get him out. He was an incredible person that everyone liked. I haven't talked to the first responders in a while, but I know it took a toll on them, especially since the anchor failed. It's still hard for me watching this video after all these years.

I've been caving once before and I absolutely loved it. The feeling of adventure as you descend into a deep dark cave, squeezing through tight gaps only to emerge a couple hours later to the beautiful sunlight and fresh air is exhilarating. The only caveat? I went with an experienced guide in a well-mapped cave. The "tight gaps" were more like squeezing through a hole in a wall, tight enough to feel adventurous but I could always see the other end and there was always room to shuffle back if I needed to. The biggest risk was twisting your ankle and having a shit of a walk back to the car. I understand caving, I don't understand that

I never had claustrophobia, and I still don't. But one time, I was in a cave where I had to crawl like this on a flat surface, not upside down, to get into a space. Then, I realized I had to go back that way, and it was even tighter going back. At the time, it didn't bother me too much, but thinking back on it now, I know I never want to be in that position again. I'll go into a cave where I can walk upright, but never again will I crawl into a tight space. Just watching this gave me so much anxiety that I started breathing heavily and gasping for air. I had to stop watching before it was over. I just can't anymore. This is too much for my heart. It's pounding right now, and I'm feeling claustrophobic, stuck, and scared that I won't make it out of there, and I'm not even there!

I got an MRI recently. I'm not claustrophobic exactly, but the first few minutes (or maybe seconds? Time dilates weirdly in those conditions) I was actively working not to panic. Didn't help they secure a cage over your face.
Putting yourself in these situations takes a totally different breed of human.
