It’s a classic example of a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. From people correcting me on a word pronunciation…where they are wrong, to misidentifying any number of things, all while acting like an authority, it makes me crazy. Do a little research. Open a book even. So much online is just not correct.

People need to remember that just because something became popular, not EVERYONE did it just so. People have always been individuals and put their own twist on it. The bouffant hairstyle, for instance. Both Marie Antoinette AND Mary Tyler Moore had ‘bouffant’ hair. Think about that for five minutes. 😂

Internet culture rewards commenters for correcting people, even erroneously, getting them attention and letting them be perceived as the actual expert. I see this constantly on technical content — people can’t help themselves from “um actually”ing experts in their field with the wildest stuff. Not that no one is wrong on the internet, but there’s a feedback loop that makes comments like this more and more common.

People like this are one of the reasons I stopped going to civil war reenactments after eleven years in the hobby.
Some people don't care about history, they don't care about doing their research. All they care about is FEELING right, and bullying the people around them into conforming to their personal idea of what the past looked like. And don't even bother setting them straight, because they literally don't even care about actually being correct.
And for the record, the other reason I stopped going to civil war reenactments is because they became overrun by white supremacists. I do not think these two things are unrelated.

I would also like to add that Evelyn Nesbit's hairstyles were kind of "scandalous" (having your hair down was considered sort of sexy and provocative) so most women would not wear their hair like this, especially not day to day, if they wanted to look "respectable". So just something to be aware of - hairstyles had nuance and meaning (more tied to women's morals than today) and famous people were not/are not the norm. (This is an info dump, not a critique or correction - just adding additional info)

I can't imagine being at an event surrounded by people with the same hairstyle - unless it was basic training in the military.
I remember doing my laundry for the first time in technical school at about my 7th month in the Air Force, when two civilian women came it to empty the coins and service the washers and dryers. It took me several minutes before I realized one of them was a guy with long hair. 🙃
