Cure a midlife crisis with a 12,500 mile canoe adventure. Most men do it with a flashy sports car. For Don Watson it was a two-year journey through the rivers of the USA that took him from Tennessee to Alaska … in a one-man canoe. Don was a retired publisher. He didn’t like the idea of sitting around the house. Being an adventurer at heart he bought a 15-foot, custom-made canoe and set off from Chattanooga, Tennessee for his two-year cruise. Along the way he survived angry alligators on a Louisiana bayou, mountainous tides on the Mississippi river and a 15-foort great white shark in the Bermuda Triangle. By the time the journey ended he had spent 487 days in his canoe. This story aired on Channel 2 Action News in 1976.
