I hope the client got GOOD compensation because losing your hand due to someone else's recklessness AND willfully negligent behaviour is, at the very least, so infuriating

I don't care how many 'safety' measures there are. I am removing the power source before doing anything to blades like that.

Disabling safety features is one of the dumbest most reckless and downright illegal things that can be done to equipment...

My first week at General Motors years ago was all spent in a classroom being hammered over the head about the process of locking out a machine before any maintenance, and being shown pictures and video of previous plant accidents.

I did this for years, this happens alot. Working on the legal side, you realize that every body part has a value in court. Many people aren't accepting of this. Workers comp laws, at least ny, are seemingly fair.

Commercial Appliance Journeyman here.
I've locked out appliances because interlocks were bypassed by the owners of the appliance, and i got fired for the pleasure of trying to keep people alive.
Can you guess the bitterness i carry because my them employer thought the client's profits were more important than a human's right to work safely?

Why LOTO procedures are important while doing maintenance. (Lock out tag out )

That's pretty fucked up.

I worked at a recycling center and the owner was pretty cheap he wouldn't let anyone clean or grab anything out of the machines unless they were unplugged. No accidents, no lawsuits, smart guy.

I work in maintenance for a concrete plant and there should have been a lock out tag out system on this machine . All electrical components should have been de energized and a lock should have been placed on both the electrical panel & the control panel of the machine before even thinking of cleaning the machine

Bypassed safety featured is bad. However, surely, when maintaining any machine like that, it should be isolated from the electrical supply?

I work on large industrial equipment, even if all that is true it still should have been locked out at the breaker before doing any preventative maintenance.

And that's why you pull the power plug on a machine before doing maintenance

Never mind the safety feature they disabled. The fact maintenance workers have to wash it by hand is already a major problem by itself

I hope they settled for something big cause that's just messed up

LOTO. You never maintain machinery with power still applied. Electrical, mechanical, or potential energy should be dealt with first.

To answer the “why wasn’t it isolated?” Question.

Several reasons. Sometimes it’s hardwired in and isolating it via the breaker isn’t an option.

Safety features usually actually isolate the device itself. So opening the cover to get access to the blade should completely isolate the circuit.

Also, isolation is usually only a thing in devices that can be remote started and therefore you don’t want someone in a control room going “we need that piece of machinery on, turn it on” without realising someone has it open for maintenance.

The previous sellers had these features all bypassed. Why? I have no idea, they’re there to protect the user. If they’re faulty, you do so at your own risk and definitely do NOT sell the product without telling the buyer you’ve done so.

Also as a buyer. Always get your own checks done.

Just bought a car? Service it. If it fails, charge the dealership.

Edit: DEFINITELY DONT SELL.

LOTO. Dont rely on 'safety mechanisms'.

this is why one of the "lockout" rules is to test it first. also: never put your hand where you wouldn't put your hot dog
