It’s Denver’s very first day of live-escalator training 🐾⬆️

What you don’t see: the extensive off-escalator preparation that led to his first exposure going so smoothly.

Escalator training is a specialized skill that can be risky if not done right. I highly recommend working with an experienced professional if you ever need to introduce your service dog to escalators.

As a certified Guide Dog Mobility Instructor, I was trained during a three year apprenticeship where I introduced many dogs to escalators safely — so I’m bringing that knowledge into my own service dog’s training journey here.

Want a full escalator training tutorial? Let me know in the comments!

Accessibility: yellow lab in orange vest and red back boots is led onto an up-escalator by a woman in black pants and black shirt.

Awesome work Laura & Denver! I taught my dog to jump over something before going on escalators. Now I cue her “jump” and she jumps over the end of the escalator, but I also always have booties on her when riding escalators just for safety!

I also train service dogs on escalators and I'm incredibly impressed that you can hold a camera while doing it!!! That's true skill 😂 respect

I've only done elevator and stairs training with my sd and he's great with those, and if I use the escalator, I just pick up him. Him not being trained riding an escalator sometimes makes me feel like a fraud, but every time when I wanted to start training this, my anxiety got the best of me 😞

That's awesome! I would definitely benefit from a full Escalator training tutorial. Although I think if I am going to Escalator train my pup when he's fully grown I will be asking a professional trainer who has experience to help train him.

I think we will forever be relegated to stairs and elevators. Astro had a significant reaction the first time we saw an escalator. We worked through it, but I haven’t wanted to push it by actually getting on!

Oh geez! My Simon would probably be better about an escalator than I would be. Unless someone gave me praise and chocolate bites the entire way. Lol. Hmm. That's an idea. 😅

You and Denver did really well, though.

Why does he wear boots only on his back paws? Is it for traction? Is it specific to this guy or do you do this with all your dogs? Just curious? Thanks!

I noticed shoes are only on the back feet. Can I ask why. I also train mine for the escalators.

Do you use high value treats or kibble to train him whilst out in public/ or doing tasks?
