First of all, the thumb nail is technically inaccurate. So before you question anything, question yourself. Because William was not Licht. He wasn't even Patri. Patri and William just happened to share the same body that resembled Licht's. Except, William had purple eyes, white eyelashes, a scar and all of that was largely hidden by his clothes and mask. And, by the way, something like a mask can confuse people of your identity apparently, so it's not so weird.
So I'm convinced you didn't even watch the anime.
