It was an immersive world that felt lived in. And you got to visit that world with a competently made game. It didn't do anything new but it did take a lot of disparate ideas and combine them. It made Xbox a thing. I understand some people may want more flashy bits than it can offer, but like Star Wars, it reshaped a genre and with good reason.

Two reasons why we loved it: co-op, especially beating it on legendary with different skulls on/Easter eggs and multiplayer with friends, where we would create new game modes (like zombies).
It was less of a hardcore shooter and more of a place to hangout with friends, show each other glitches and secrets within the games.
