Are you healing after leaving an unhealthy/cultish church or group? We would love to have you join us at the Called to Freedom Conference in Simpsonville, KY, July 28–29, 2023.

Believers from a wide variety of backgrounds—Branhamism, the 2x2 sect, Apostolic/Oneness Pentecostalism, Holiness Pentecostalism, the Conservative Holiness movement, Bethel, Independent Fundamental Baptist churches, Mormonism, Mennonite churches—will be gathering together to support and encourage each other in Christ on our journeys of disentangling and rebuilding faith.

The Cultish Show hosts (Apologia Studios) will be speaking on transitioning into a healthy church and finding our identity in Christ. There will be panel discussions on walking in freedom in Christ and recognizing/healing from spiritual abuse. Panelists include Naomi Wright from beEmboldened Ministries, Aurelio Lessey from “Keepin’ It In Context” (YouTube), and Jennifer Brewer from Amateur Faith Night. Jen Brallier, Anna Bledsoe, and Tracy Bowen will be joining us to share their testimonies!

There’s no such thing as a perfect church, but there is such a thing as a healthy church. Serving other believers is important. Faithfulness is important. But at the end of the day, we must not put faithfulness to people over faithfulness to God’s Word. If we’re attending an unhealthy church that is straying from Scripture, and especially if they’re perpetuating abuse, how are we going to be spiritually nourished and strong enough to serve others well? How are we going to fulfill the Great Commission in our community? Where will the new converts be discipled if our own church is toxic?

If you’re unsure if your church is healthy, please consider these slides and Scriptures prayerfully. May God grant you with wisdom and peace as you discern where He would have you to serve Him.

Note: Church health is a spectrum. The slides represent two sides of the spectrum on select issues. Many churches will not fit either description, but they will be closer to one than the other. Trajectory is important.

Ephesians 4:11-15

I recently read a statement from a terrible article written by a pitiful group of ‘church-hurt’ rebels who feed on soulish, confused, fleshpots who are bitter against church authority. The article supposedly compares ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy churches’. The statement reads...

“In an unhealthy church, faithful attendance is mandatory; in a healthy church, faithful attendance is encouraged.” Berean Holiness, ‘A Healthy vs. Unhealthy Church’

It seems ‘Berean Holiness’, contrary to their name, apparently failed to be ‘more noble’ (Acts 17:11) by searching the Scriptures and applying Hebrews 10:24-25 to their reasoning (Acts 17:11). If so, they would’ve found being faithful to the assembly of the saints is a New Testament command. Let’s expose their faulty assertion by re-phrasing it in other ways...

“In an unhealthy church, refraining from Cannibalism is mandatory; in a healthy church, refraining from Cannibalism is encouraged, or—In an unhealthy church, refraining from Child sex-trafficking is mandatory; in a healthy church, refraining from Child sex-trafficking is encouraged.”

Sounds spiritually reckless and stupid, right? That’s because it is.
