I learnt this (and so much more) from I Chernevs' book "Logical chess move by move."
Essential reading ,once you've learnt how to play chess.

I have completely stumped attacks by my opponents before by just not moving any of the pawns in front of my king at all, and they usually don't know what to do because there's none of the weaknesses to take advantage of! Meanwhile I just attack the other side of the board.

That's true. But it seems like every time I castle whichever side, my opponent immediately begins to attack that side, and becomes a major pain in the behind.

Advice to beginners should start with the caveat that principles are guidelines, the other guy is trying to do to you what you are trying to do to him/her, and you can't always get what you want. I noticed in your game with the 1000 guy that he was overly concerned about not doubling pawns, for example.. It's an important life lesson, too: life is a series of imperfect choices, rarely a clear-cut distinction between right and wrong. The secret to success in chess and in life is good judgment and a willingness to learn from your mistakes,. My (ELO 1800ish) two bits.
