The Hippo (short for Hippopotamus Defense) is a setup that can be used against almost any opening. You can get away with very little opening theory, and you can probably take your opponents out of theory rather quickly as well.

It's not the best opening if you're looking for perfect play, but it's definitely a solid one. You see masters (GMs, IMs, FMs, ...) play it all the time in blitz and bullet. Because of the simplicity of the setup, you can blitz out (or even premove, at your own risk) the first moves of the opening really fast and develop an early time advantage that could end up being crucial later on in the game.

It's even possible to play this system as White, the Hippopotamus Attack, but it's less common as it seems rather unambitious with the starting pieces. Nevertheless it gets you a similar position as you would get with Black with one extra tempo. So if your goal is to avoid theory, this might be a great option for you!
