I test drove a Saturn Astra one time. It was literally the slowest car I’ve ever been in. I don’t know how those things get up to speed on the expressway. I had a 91 lumina that was running on four out of six cylinders, and it had more behind it than that thing.

I couldn't imagine a little turbo 4 telling me I'm not allowed to have full power. I daily a '13 Focus ST, and that car lets you have your boost once you get in it.

I used to own a Cruze (I was young & stupid), and the Chevy dealership was flabbergasted when I explained I was trading it in because it was an absolute dog at full throttle.
I had never owned a vehicle that seemed like it had a brain fart when you hit the gas before.

That's honestly how I feel about my BM (3rd) gen Mazda3 2.0 6MT. There's not a fun bone in that cars body. It's all about fuel efficiency, which is excellent, don't get me wrong 38.5mpg combined average. 42-45 hwy depending on slopes. But the drive by wire, spongey, no feel clutch, and the way the revs hang forever when youre trying to change up in a hurry always leave me asking the question "why make it a manual?". Maintenance intervals and expenses aside, the 6mt was wasted on that car. Maybe the 2.5 version was more sporty with the extra 30hp, but did they really stiffen the suspension at all? Doubt it. How much fuel economy do you give up for the ectra 30hp? I'll never know.

The 1.4 in the Jetta that replaced a 2012 Cruze feels way better than the Cruze ever did. Way more linear torque that goes enough for city driving.

My Chevy cruze with the ecotech blew the engine because all the pistons cracked, so maybe GM have it kind of turned down because they know the engine is a literal time bomb just waiting to explode.

Because cars like this are not built for performance.The turbos on cars like this blow up when people over-stress them. They are made for efficiency.

I did drag race a Cruze, but it was not a manual. On this model, putting the automatic into +/- shift mode did allow full throttle, but I did notice the wheels would not break loose. Regrettably the starting line beam was broken all day so I don't have a number. The 'Turbo' was not felt per se.

I have a six speed diesel Cruze, I’ve had it since 2018 brand new. I get almost eighty miles to the gallon, it’s as fast as I need it to be on a highway and it’s fun to drive. Also it was affordable so that was nice.

I would imagine it’s largely for export. Manuals are way more common in Europe and the UK. Most people here learn to drive on manuals and get manuals as first cars

Hi all, I got a 2014 Cruze as my first car..
I wish I didn’t to say the least. As fun as the tiny (emphasis on tiny) turbo noises are, I have to ring it dry to get any action.. overall, very sluggish feeling.

Manual also means less tech that can fail with age. And it can be more fuel efficient. At least it was. Dunno about now.
Thats why in Europe many would like a manual.

I really do miss driving cars that will let you be as stupid as you want. It is frustrating to have the car decide to shut down your fun right when it starts to get fun.
