I call this "thread painting". The stitching takes many hours and primarily uses a long stitch that can be a "split stitch." The key is the thread. I assume this is hand dyed silk. Very$$. I have used a rayon thread that had a similar sheen and color saturation. But it wouldn't behave like silk.
This "Master Embroiderer" is exceptional. An artist in fiber.
