How much freedom of speech should musicians have? Booking agencies are displaying some very interesting selective outrage when choosing who to drop and who to keep on their rosters lately. It is VERY difficult to work outside of these companies at a certain level, as about 4 of them have a stranglehold on the biggest stages in the Western world. So I think it is worth discussing some of their recent "business decisions" in regards to Glastonbury and bands like #kneecap and #bobvylan.

Nina Simone said that she chose to reflect the times and the conditions in which she found herself in her music, and that it was her duty as an artist to do so. In 1968 she sang Mississippi Goddam and continued to perform Four Women despite widespread controversy. She risked deplatforming, blacklisting, and, quite frankly, her life to speak out. Not many other black artists at the time choose the same path and I don't necessarily think that's for better or for worse. It's a helpful barometer for how enmeshed an artist is towards a cause - and it's a helpful guage of where our own values lean.

Same can be said for the current controversies, and for any future controversies that will surely arise. There will be those that take the risk to reflect the times in their music and see it as their duty to do so, and others who will not take any overt stance. Those reasons are theirs to decide. It's complicated but at the end of the day, I'll spend my time and money where I see alignment. If any of this makes sense 🤷🏽‍

Hope this video get more spread. Censorship only makes that those who "think different" or do "bad things" just do it more privately. No one is how they are just because they hear a song or an opinion. Personality and taste begins in childhood and family.

I mean there is a difference between freedom of speech and censorship.

Private companies have every right to drop musicians

Freedom of speech means the government cant harass you for speaking against them. Thats it.

You can write the songs and make the art, and countries that value free speech won't stop you but a private company focused on making money is going to back what it wants and what makes it money.

Imagine if any of these offended folks ever read the lyrics to old Slam Metal bands like Gutteral Secrete. They’d croak immediately lol
