Tesla is enabling unsupervised Full Self Driving (FSD) this year (June 2025) in Austin. There are 1.2 to 1.5 million HW4-equipped Teslas (#autonomousvehicles) on US roads as of May 2025, with an additional 600,000 HW4 vehicles added annually (roughly 50,000 per month). All these cars have the hardware required to be a robotaxi.

Tesla cars have driven over 3 billion miles on #teslafsd (#autonomousdriving).

In autonomous vehicles, photon counting is increasingly adopted to
address glare challenges. Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system,
as of June 2025, leverages direct photon counting,
reportedly achieving 16x better dynamic range with 12-bit raw
photon counts, improving low-light performance and glare handling .

Academic research further validates these findings. The paper "Vision without the Image" explores photon-counting sensors for low-light visual
recognition, crucial for autonomous vehicle safety, suggesting photon-efficient algorithms that could extend to glare mitigation.
