English is notoriously bad when it comes to the sound-spelling correspondence.
➡️ Just look at the words "five" and "give".
Both use the vowel letter "i" but it represents /aɪ/ in "five" and /ɪ/ in "give.
Also, the final "e" is silent!
Why is this important?
👄 It's important because when we speak, our mouths don't know spelling, but only physical sound.
🗣️ The physical sounds we make affect how our tongues and other articulators have to move.
This physical movement affects our accents.
💡 So, to sound more native, you have to move your mouth in a particular way that native speakers move their mouths, otherwise you won't sound native
And this is why when you only rely on spelling to inform how you pronounce things, it is not enough.
⚠️ And in the case of English with its low spelling-to-sound correspondence, it can be downright dangerously confusing!
