John being over critical for sure. It's a gorgeous melody and I agree about the tremolo. The lyrics are quite poetic too. Classic early Beatles that deserves more love.

The melody grabbed me when I was a kid and still does. The chorus is soaring and mournful at the same time. How many composers could manage that?

There's one moment in this song that perplexed me as a boy. In the line: "Bright, very bright" he trills the R in an almost self mocking tone that, as an old man, I now think suggests that even then he had misgivings. Regardless, I liked it then, and I like it still.
