Secondly, if you look at current events and how close we are to a civil war and a world war combined with the "reality desync" of travelling to an alternate dimension (the futher back you go, the more reality is distorted as per many world interpretation) Our timeline could be catching up so to speak.

First of all, he doesn't know the story that well because it was the unix 2038 time bug, not the y2k bug. We can patch everything over to 64 bit, but there are major databases and apps that use 32bit unix timecodes to this day and if a civil war followed by a world war, starting 20 years ago in 2004, it's safe to assume there would still be some issues in 2036 trying to kick start the frikin internet again.
