As a pharmaceutical chemist I absolutely approve of this advice. However, it should be know that generic versions are allowed to differ in the inactive ingredients (filler, binder, coating, preservative, taste etc.) as long as the active ingredient, dosage and route of administration is the same and importantly, proven to have the same efficacy as the branded drug. For 99,9% of the people this does not matter and you should go for the generic versions but there are instances where the patient could have an adverse effect to some of the inactive ingredients and in rare occasions have to go for the formulation that does not contain the substance, unfortunately that could happen to be the branded drug.

When my twins had reflux as newborns and weren't gaining because they were spitting up so much, the Dr prescribed Prevacid. The pharmacy filled it generic and it was still $180 for 15 pills. "Because it's a special tablet that dissolves in water." So then I went on Amazon and ordered Lanzoprazole melting tablets and got 42 pills for $12. It's the exact same thing. Now if only that worked for my insulin....

Being raised poor taught me that. Also, Benadryl, which is diphenhydramine, is also the exact same med as nighttime sleep aid. So, sometimes it's cheaper to buy the sleep aid, if it's on sale or vice-versa.

I didn’t realize it took nursing school to understand “spending less money”

I thought this was common knowledge, but apparently not. My mom was a nurse though, so I grew up being told to always get the off brand because it’s the same exact medicine in the same exact dosage for half to price. Sometimes they cut the dose in half though, so just read the label to make sure :)

I get all my basic meds from the dollar store. Antihistamines, ibuprofen, cold medicine, etc. they work exactly the same if you know what to look for.

"I'm not going to sugar coat it for you." - generic ibuprofen, probably.

As a german, seeing these sold so casually and in huge amounts in a store is so bizzare to me. We usually have packages with like 20 Tablets sold in pharmacies.

Hold on, your moms never taught y'all to look at the ingredients and price compare?

As someone in the UK… you can just buy 500 tablets off the shelf?? We have a limit of two packs, usually with 16 tabs, per transaction. That’s wild

I learned it working as a part time cashier in a pharmacy as a teenager in high school. The pharmacist told me to absolutely buy the store brands because the law requires them to be the exact same in order to be sold/labeled as that medication. I learned this lesson early and it saved me so much money over the years.

this isn't shit you learn in medical school, this is common sense.

I just failed the NCLEX. I cannot begin to articulate the level of embarrassment and heartache I'm feeling. I'm confident that I will be a good nurse. I just need to get past this, move on and persevere.

My old pharmacist told me about this when I was like 16. He said, all otc meds are the same because they have to go through the same testing and regulations. So, you are just paying more for the label.
Love him...he retired years ago.

Was lucky to have teachers that taught us to read the labels and to check prices.
