I had chronic neck and back pain while on a softer mattress with 2 or 3 pillows. YEARS of waking up in pain. I switcheed to a medium-firm memory foam. The first few days, I woke up a little stiff. But by day 4, my body felt amazing! I only sleep on 1 pillow now and almsot never wake up eith body pain

Soft to Medium firmness for the mattress and an extra firm pillow is what I prefer. Personally I hate feeling my head sink. It also makes me super uncomfortable physically. The elevation helps with my neck and back that are all messed up. I'm unsure how they got messed up really but ever since I was in middle school I've had back pain and sort of locking going on with my back and as I've gotten older (I'm 24) that's gotten more pronounced. Best way to describe it is that I can't bent or turn my back unless I extensively crack my back and do stretches. Otherwise it locks up and is ridged and uncomfortable. I suspect it might be from heavy backpacks I would carry in middle and highschool. I would be carrying about 50 lbs of books every day, no exaggeration for 6 years. Then during and after highschool I had a physically intensive Job until I was 20 where I would need to carry 40 lbs boxes across a room and stand on my feet all day, never being allowed to sit down. So I believe that might be why. I can't stand on my feet anymore for more than 2 hours without severe back pain.
