Music Psychology / The Science of Frisson - Have you ever been listening to an intense or emotional piece of music and felt chills run up your spine or get goosebumps? This experience is called frisson, which is a French term meaning ā€œaesthetic chills,ā€ and happens to about half of the population. Frisson generally lasts about 4ā€“5 seconds, usually pleasurable. It can be triggered by loud passages of music and passages that defy some level of musical expectation and is thought to be an intense emotional response brought about by the release of dopamine in the brain.

I would love to hear if you experience this, and if so, what songs trigger it :) This happens to me all the time, especially during guitar solos!

Certain songs have this effect on me. But over time, too much exposure to a certain song tends to diminish this effect. But when I step away from the song for an amount of time, the effect returns.

Oh yes! I didnā€™t know it had a name. You know how The Warning has this effect on so many YouTube reactors. Sometimes also tears. Are the tears the same basic reaction as the goosebumps? Have you seen the several videos ā€œmaking reactors cry,ā€ Iā€™m fairly certain youā€™ve seen links to them on their Patreon community or Discord? Certainly if not you need to watch those. Thanks for your insightful posts.

It's nice to learn that my Eargasm has a name haha. Jokings aside, I'm really thankful I'm on the half of the population that can feel this, it's one of the best feelings I can feel/ever felt in my life.

Back in my teens Godsmack would trigger this daily, almost all of their songs have a huge heavy build up until it explodes into some amazing guitar solos by Tony Rambola.

The Tea Party also has some divine build up on their songs to the solos/climax. Songs like "The River", "Inanna", "A certain slaint of light", "Save me".. I could stay here all day talking about them, but truly feels like a trippy out of body eargasm when it hits.

One thing for me is that it's most commonly triggered with Rock/Metal. I don't know if its because its my favorite genre or if it's because it's a intense genre in general.

It's very uncommon for me to get this the first time I listen to a song, it does happen every now and then, but usually, as you described, it start happening once you know that it's coming and you hit that peak dopamine with the climax, which, of course takes more than one or two plays.

The first half of Bjorkā€™s ā€œVespertine.ā€ Itā€™s like 35 minutes straight of chills and magical visions (I sort of imagine how I would create a video to the songs and put together scenes in my imagination). Sheā€™s good for my blood pressure. šŸ„°

Eddie's guitar solo on "Dreams" gives me chills. Many other tunes, as well.

The woman who does the solo on The Rolling Stones song, Give me Shelter, when she hits that high note and her voice cracks Oh my Goodness since I was a kid her voice makes chills go down my back. Another one that makes my hair on my arms and neck stand up is The Great Gig in The Sky by Pink Floyd. Karen O from The Yeah Yeah Yeahsā€¦ whaaaa? Hee voice is angelic. The Dimebag solo in the Pantera song Floods always hits me in the feels like Ugh. šŸ˜¢ ā¤ā¤

I get that all the time. Certain songs bring it out of me. ā€œA Warm Placeā€ by NIN, at the end when it resolves gets me every time. Whenever Elisa hits the high E in the song ā€œDancingā€ is another really strong one for me.

Oh my goodness, this is beyond epiphany in my opinion. Yes, I get the goosebumps. Is this much dopamine a good thing. Many intros to many songs trigger this. Working for the weekend, YYZ, Still of the night (yikes) and so many others. "Incredible post". Hope you're having a great weekend. I love to learn neat stuff and this helps!
