Now this is one of those monsters begging the question of "what preys on it?" since the adaptations it has seem very in line with an animal that expects to be hunted or attacked.
Granted, we have a partial answer in Nergigante, and an Elder might want to defend itself against other ones.
We could also have a speculation on whether there is an in-universe reason for the Chameleos/Teostra/Kushala trio to circularly counter eachother.

My school owns a chameleon and I've had alot of experience with reptiles and I want to say that I love how the monster hunter rise team added when chameleos isn't fighting it moves and while doing so moves back and forth in between steps like a chameleon mimicking a leaf moving in the winds

chemelos was my first elder dragon kill, only reason i was able to beat it was because elder dragons used to keep the damage you gave them, unlike now where you're basically expected to kill them in one quest
