How To Wind A Skein | Crochet Tips

WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS?

I’ve had SO many questions about what to do with those gorgeous hand died skeins. I admit, they can look a little intimidating if you haven’t ‘caked’ them up before. So here’s how:

• Untwist the skein to form a ring.
• Locate the knot with 4 strands, this will be the ends plus a tie. Cut the knot.
• Cut or I tie the remaining knots and remove ties (strands of yarn)
• Place onto a swift or even the back of a chair.
• Connect to your yarn winder. If you don’t have one, you can simply wind with your hand to create a ball.
• Remove from the wonder and TADA! It’s all ready to go!

As an extra tip, fold the yarn label and insert it into the middle of the cake to keep track of the details.

When using the cake, pull from the middle of the cake.

Some people like to put onto the swift before removing the ties! You can do whichever you prefer 🥰

Keep a look out for my upcoming pattern releases using this gorgeous yarn from @truly_yarn

Winding the wool is always such a mesmerising process, I love watching it, thanks for this! I was given the Scheepjes wooden swift as a gift a few years back, it’s so beautiful I keep it on my display shelf when not in use. A helpful hint I’ve learned is to run the wool over the back of my hand to support it into the winder so I’m not giving it to much friction and roughing up the strands, particularly if it’s very delicate. Once I’ve got it started off I take my hand away and try not to interact with it at all.

It took me a few hanks before figuring out which tail to use. It now takes me 5m to wind and not 45m 😂

So what is the reason you do this is it to make the wool into a ball to use instead of it just like all loose n floppy?

My thing that holds the wool before it gets wound into a ball is lost, any ideas what I could use I stead or how to wind without that part, thanks 😊 x
