use pool noodles for packing -- cut to length and put some around frame and some crossways to brace the box

Had been traveling with a bike for 5 years. 3 incidents: One cracked carbon frame, one dented aluminum frame, missing Garmin computer

Absolutely horrific 🤬 If I‘d ever go on such a trip I‘ll probably book a hire … even if it‘s only because of the hassle dissembling and reassembling your bike twice and storing the bike box afterwards

Don't blame the airline for luggage damage, blame the handling company working for that poxy shopping mall with runway outside.

I started cycling in the mid 1980's. In those days cycling was seen as being Green. We were classed along with the "Save the Whales" and "Ban the Bomb" people.
But now, for some people, at least, cycling has nothing to do with preserving the Planet.

Painful. This is why I bought a second hand bike just for travel. Not a chance I’d take my £12,000 bike abroad. Hate Ryanair… I know how much those scratches on your bike hurt!!!

I use pipe insulation with zip ties to cover all the tubes of my frame. It is a tedious process, but prevents the kind of damage that you unfortunately had on your bike.

I always removed the rear derailleur and used zip ties to hold it safely on the frame

I’ve only ever taken my bike abroad in a cardboard box because I’ve been doing a point to point and have to dispose of it. My bike has been fine both times, 😅 but I know what you mean, it is a scary risk! Cycling holiday insurance doesn’t cover what happens at the airport, but the airline should cover it if there are any damages, I have experience of getting money back from delayed flights and that has been fairly easy for me, I don’t know what it would be like trying to get money back for damaged goods, I guess it depends on the airline

Just hire a bike at your destination. Probably won't cost much more than paying for the sports equipment charge and you don't have the hassle of booking Uber XL and paying more for that as well and faffing with 2x assembly and disassembly. Worth doing only if racing really.

You can't expect them to care that the box was beaten up, especially if it's structural integrety was unaffected

The bagage guy's thoughts: "its not my stuff so who cares, I'll just toss this person's shit around"

If you think thats rough handling, you should see what a shipping company would do if you posted it.
